Resolution on the Military at Pohakuloa

The Democratic Party of Hawaii passed a resolution against expansion of the Pohakuloa Training Area at its state convention last month.

Hawaii State Democratic Pary
Resolution on the Military at Pohakuloa
Passed at 2004 Convention

Whereas, the expansion of the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) and the introduction of the Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) will have an adverse impact on the environment of Pohakuloa and the island of Hawai'i;

Whereas, the expansion of the PTA and the introduction of the SBCT, and specifically live fire training, will leave unexploded ordinance that will pose a significant health and public safety hazard for generations to come, and

Whereas, the expansion of the PTA and the introduction of the SBCT is considered by many Hawaiians as a desecration of lands considered sacred and of significant cultural importance, and

Whereas, the current war in Iraq has demonstrated that the USA has used its military power in questionable ways, and

Whereas, this misuse of power has undermined both American interests and security and thus the stated need for a SBCT force in Hawai'i has to be questioned, and thus

Whereas, the clear negative impacts from the expansion of PTA and introduction of SBCT outweigh the questionable stated need for a SBCT force in Hawai'i; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved, that every effort be made to inform our representatives in Congress that the Democratic Party of Hawai'i finds the expansion at Pohakuloa Training Area not in the best interest of the citizens living on the Big Island and the nation and the world; and

Be It Further Resolved, that copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Governor of Hawai'i, Hawai'i's Congressional Delegation, the Secretary of Defense, and the President of the United States.
