U.S. empire building

Gary Zimmerman writes a letter in the Maui News about American imperialism and the extend of U.S. military bases around the world, and reminds us of "another U.S. empire building date of 1893 involving Hawaii."

Although the U.S. intervention in Hawaii in 1893 was done without authorization of the Congress or the administration at the time, and was soon thereafter condemned by President Cleveland, the purported annexation of 1898, done through a mere joint resolution of Congress after a proposed treaty failed in the Senate due in part to overwhelming opposition of Hawaii's national population, was done explicitly for military purposes under the exigencies of the Spanish-American War. The first extra-continental expansion of U.S. imperialism across international waters, it was strongly protested by anti-imperialists at the time, but led shortly thereafter to the taking of Guam, Cuba, Samoa and other overseas territories.

Modern imperialism involves building military bases

Easily the most important right in our Constitution is the one giving the right to go to war exclusively to the elected representatives of the people, that is, to Congress, not to the president! Bush is expanding an American empire which consists of 725 military bases in 138 foreign countries.

This American imperialism has cost $750 billion and caused the U.S. to flirt with bankruptcy. We are not paying for this three-quarters of a trillion dollars but putting it on the tab. Bush is running up some of the most extraordinary budget and trade deficits in history. If the bankers of Asia, especially China and Japan, should tire of financing this, if they notice the euro is now stronger than the dollar, then all this ends - whether or not they like the Boy Emperor from Crawford, Texas. The U.S. would face a terrible crisis.

There never was a plan to leave Iraq because there was no intention of leaving Iraq. The U.S. is currently building 14 military bases there. Dick Cheney can't imagine giving up that oil. And the military can't imagine giving up those bases. That's why they can't come up with a plan to leave.

Lest we forget, that brings up another U.S. empire building date of 1893 involving Hawaii.
