Hawaiians deserve equal compensation, opportunities

Derek Kauanoe writes a letter in today's Maui News:

I applaud David Paul St. John's May 14 letter, "Economy driving away Hawaiians and their aloha."

Since Western contact, Hawaiians, sometimes out of curiosity, left Hawaii to explore the rest of the world. A good example of this is Henry Opukahaia, the first known Hawaiian Christian convert. There were others who left on trading vessels and worked for companies such as the Hudson's Bay Co. in the Pacific Northwest. A few Hawaiians even served the Union Army in the U.S. Civil War.

Today, however, few Hawaiians leave their homeland out of curiosity. You can read about some of the experiences they've had at www.HawaiiansAbroad.com. Many leave permanently out of necessity; a result of the economy and lack of job opportunities that pay well.

A 1990 report by Barringer and Liu prepared for Alu Like Inc. suggests that Native Hawaiians are the victims of inequality. It was written that "Not only do Native Hawaiians have lower incomes than other groups, but they receive less compensation for education, occupations, prestige and other avenues of higher incomes." If this report is still valid, it further suggests that Hawaiian college scholarship and financial assistance programs alone are not enough for Native Hawaiians in their pursuit for professional upward mobility.

In this respect, I agree with St. John that a way must be found to preserve and help Native Hawaiians. For this to happen though, we do not need additional entitlements. We must ensure that Native Hawaiians receive the same compensation for education, occupations, etc. as everyone else.
