KÜ KÄNAKA KÜ’Ë KÜ’Ë IS THEME FOR REINSTATED HAWAIIAN GOVERNMENT’S FLOAT AND WALKING UNIT IN THIS YEAR’S
KING KAMEHAMEHA DAY PARADE
Honolulu, HI. - It is said that Hawaiians are a dying race and they will soon be forgotten, but the Reinstated Hawaiian Government says we will not be forgotten, “Kü Känaka, Kü’ë, Kü’ë” (Stand Kanaka Resist!). This year’s Kamehameha Day Parade, scheduled for Saturday, June 12, will be the first time RHG is participating with a Float and Walking Unit. “Kü Känaka, Kü’ë, Kü’ë” theme was selected to honor Kamehameha’s legacy, “E na‘i wale no ‘oukou i ku’u pono, ‘a’ole i pau,” [Labor on, strive onward, progress forward, in this my quest and vision for it is not yet done!]. Kamehameha struggled to unite his people and resist foreign occupation. We honor Kamehameha ‘Ekahi and his legacy through our actions when we took up the mantle to reinstate our inherent sovereignty right to reclaim our Kingdom that he unified. Today, the occupier continues to deny our right to sovereignty by refusing to return the Hawaiian nation to the Hawaiian people. Instead, the Akaka Bill is offered to the Hawaiian people as a consolation. This is our response—“Kü Känaka, Kü’ë, Kü’ë!”

Our float entry will depict an Ahupua’a, a concept well-known to Hawaiian’s of yesterday and today. The sustainability of an Ahupua’a was highly dependent upon mutual relationships between chiefs and commoners, upland dwellers and their seaward counterparts, and the interconnectedness of their mana. Nui ke kuleana, e kokua mai, a e alu like mai kakou! Kamehameha will also be honored with hula and oli. Our Walking unit will be comprised of ohana, friends and supporters of justice for the Hawaiian people. We invite all those to walk with us who support justice for the Hawaiian people and honor Kamehameha’s vision. Everyone participating will wear golden-yellow T-shirts emblazoned with the words, “Kü Känaka, Kü’ë, Kü’ë”.
Any group or organization interested in fundraising for their own projects, will earn $4 for each T-shirt pre-sold. The cost of the T-shirts are $15 [M-XL] and $16 [2X/3X] and will include a plate lunch after the parade.

The King Kamehameha Day Holiday was established in 1871 by Kamehameha V, and the parade itself began in 1916. It is the nation’s second oldest floral parade [the Rose Bowl Parade ranks number one]. The State of Hawai’i used to provide $150,000 a year for the Kamehameha Day Celebration, which included the parade and the traditional draping of leis on Kamehameha‘s Statue. But in 1996, the Legislature cut its funding in half and then in 1997, it cut all state funding entirely. It is our desire to have King Kamehameha Day Holiday restored to prominence.
