Grants awarded for certified kitchen in Kipahulu

The Kipahulu Community Association has been awarded two grants for the next phase of development of the agricultural processing facility and certified kitchen in Kipahulu: $46,620 from the County of Maui's Office of Economic Development, and $17,760 from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs's Community Based Economic Development Program.

The facility is designed to enable value-added processing by community members of a range of locally grown or gathered products that can then be marketed commercially, creating opportunities for income generation and skill development for residents, enhancing the self-sufficiency of the area, and providing greater access to nutritious and traditional food for East Maui residents.

The primary initial products include: poi from kalo and ulu (breadfruit); fresh salads and salsas; and foods for fundraising and public events such as the East Maui Taro Festival.

The kitchen was certified for commercial operation in August of last year, and the additional funds will be used for various tasks that will increase the capacity and functionality of the facility, including upgrades to the solar electrical and solar hot water systems.

The Kipahulu Community Association, Inc., is a nonprofit organization whose membership is comprised of all residents of Kipahulu/Kaupo area.

Kipahulu is a remote, rural "off-grid" community in East Maui with a predominantly agricultural and subsistence economy.

After the October 15 earthquake and the closure of the Paihi bridge between Hana and Kaupo, the kitchen facility was used by the County as the distribution center for emergency supplies.
