Strykers’ Island and "Axles of Evil"

Honolulu Weekly cover story two weeks ago:

The military carried out an environmental impact statement for the proposed Stryker’s Brigade at the Pöhakuloa Training Area. Critics say it’s purely a formality, that the war horse’s arrival is a done deal
...
While the Army has been going through the motions of listening to the public (holding open meetings during the initial “scoping” period, releasing a Draft EIS and holding more meetings), the opinion in many communities is that the process is corrupted. Jim Albertini, an activist and coordinator for the Malu ‘Aina Center for Non-Violent Education and Action, said, “The EIS, they have to do it by law, but it’s a fraud.”
...
“I have strong feelings about this type of activity on the land, and the acquisition of so much of it,” said local activist Mattoon. “History proves that what the military has done to our land is not right or proper. Kaho‘olawe is a good example,” he said. “If you talk to some real strong Hawaiian activists, they will say [the Strykers] are a continuation of an unjust occupation.”
