Hawaiian man fights to reclaim family's land

The Advertiser has an interesting and moving story about one man's struggle to reclaim his family's land in Waikane from military condemnation and abuse, and protect and restore the rich cultural and agricultural resources of the area. I encourage you to go read the whole story of Raymond Kamaka for one disturbing example of the real impacts of the military occupation of Hawaii on the lives and land of Hawaiians. But note this at the conclusion of the article: "He said he will reach back into history and the laws of the Hawaiian Kingdom in an attempt to prove that what has been done to him was illegal. Using American law to make government honor its contract has failed, he said."

Meanwhile, regarding other detrimental impacts of the military, Raymond L. Chuan has a letter in the Advertiser criticizing the Navy's use of sonar, which the Navy has belatedly admitted was used just prior to the mass stranding of hundreds of whales in Hanalei Bay earlier this summer.

And Kozue Uehara has a letter about U.S. forces endangering the people of Okinawa. "There are huge military bases also in Hawai'i. So, many residents in Hawai'i, I hope, would sympathize with us and our fear of the existence of military bases on our small island. Such sympathy and alignment of the people all over the world will surely empower our movement to try to solve the problem. Through this case, I would like the people in Hawai'i to reconsider the existence of the U.S. forces in a foreign country and to know how much they endanger people living there."
