Kahoolawe transfer ceremony

The Advertiser covers the Kahoolawe transfer ceremony, and mentions that "A discordant note or two sounded amid the celebration; some of the speeches were interrupted by catcalls from people upset with the military's ongoing presence and proposed expansions of operations. But Lingle urged people to remain patient for progress in the Hawaiian sovereignty movement."

The Star-Bulletin story says that "The two-hour ceremony was not without protest. Some cultural groups carried signs decrying the military presence in the state, and some Hawaiian elders heckled speakers Adm. Walter Doran and Rear Adm. Barry McCullough, commander of Navy Region Hawaii, with thumbs-down gestures and shouts of 'Stop the bombing.'"

The Washington Post also covers the story: "The island became an important symbol in the rebirth of Hawaiian culture and language and the nascent Hawaiian sovereignty movement. Native Hawaiians, who in recent years began revegetation efforts, are elated that the way is now cleared to restore one of their most sacred sites. 'We've taken on the biggest Navy in the world and held them responsible to the beliefs and practices of indigenous people. . . . That is significant for the native Hawaiian people,' said Noa Emmett Aluli, an early protest leader who is chairman of the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission, a state agency that will govern the island."

And again the Associated Press story has been picked up by San Francisco Chronicle and other publications.
