Stryker brigade wins court fight

According to the Advertiser, "Three Native Hawaiian and environmental groups have lost their federal court challenge to the Army's ongoing efforts to establish a Stryker brigade in Hawai'i. Chief U.S. District Judge David Ezra yesterday threw out their lawsuit, ruling that the groups raised their objections too late. But even if they had protested early enough, the judge said, the Army had properly notified the public and adequately studied the effects of the project." The Stryker project has been proceeding despite the lawsuit, and plaintiffs are now considering their options.

Star-Bulletin also has the story.

UPDATE: Here's the Malu 'Aina Press Release on the decision:

Stopping Stryker with Aloha Truth-Force

The Army’s Stryker Brigade can still be stopped. Federal Court Judge, David Ezra’s ruling on April 25, 2005 allowing an Hawaii Stryker Brigade to proceed is NOT the final word. There may or may not be additional legal appeals, but the real decision about Strykers in Hawaii will not be made by a court, the Army, or the U.S. Congress. It will be made by the people of Hawaii and their will to resist and stand for peace, justice and the aina with what Gandhi called “truth-force” -- non-violent action done with Hawaiian style aloha!

Every effort in a campaign of peace and justice, however small, is important. Everyone has something to contribute. Let’s work together, stand together, pray together, and if necessary, go to jail together with the spirit of Aloha Ke Akua, Aloha Aina in our hearts.

The bottom line is this. It is time for military clean up not build up. It is time to live out the words of the prophet Isaiah: “Beat swords into ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks, and learn war no more.”
