Stryker 'enhancements' could force EIS revision

The Advertiser reports: "The Pentagon yesterday confirmed that a Stryker Brigade Combat Team has been approved for Hawai'i with enhanced aviation, fire support, network and sensor capabilities, but did not detail what those enhancements will be. The uncertainty has brought into question a draft Environmental Impact Statement for the $1.5 billion brigade and whether the lengthy examination will have to be redone or revised. The 1,500-page draft was released Sept. 30. A public comment period runs through Jan. 3."

The Star-Bulletin reports: "The Army does not know if the addition of Comanche helicopters and 155 mm howitzers to the Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Schofield Barracks will delay the release of a report assessing the brigade's impact on the environment. The Pentagon officially announced yesterday that Stryker combat teams will be stationed in Hawaii and Pennsylvania. The Schofield brigade is expected to be operational by 2006, according to the Pentagon. However, the announcement did not say anything about the addition of the helicopters or artillery."

In a Star-Bulletin letter, Steve Tayama questions how much military the islands can endure.
