UH sit-in protest continues, arrests threatened

The Advertiser reports:
A sit-in at the office of University of Hawai'i President David McClain by students and faculty opposing a Navy research center stretched into its second night with McClain agreeing to spend today meeting with small groups of protesters at the administration building.

By late afternoon yesterday the ranks of protesters was growing with the addition of Native Hawaiian students wearing red shirts and adding their own flags of protest. Some of the strongest objections to the Navy research proposal have come from Native Hawaiians.

Campus security forces were monitoring the situation.

More than 35 protesters were peaceful as they initially pitched about eight tents Thursday on the lawn next to Bachman Hall. They hung banners opposing military research from the indoor railing, occupied McClain's office and demanded that he sign a statement opposing creation of a Navy research center that could include classified research.

McClain has declined to do so.

Opposition has been wide-ranging, based on concerns that the research could involve secret weapons projects and objections to constraints on academic freedom and the right to publish. Other issues are Native Hawaiian concerns that a Navy research center would "fuel military expansion and its negative impacts on the land and people of Hawai'i," according to an official statement from opponents.

"We'll stay as long as necessary," said Ikaika Hussey, a graduate student and an opposition leader. "Our resolve is strong and our numbers are growing. We're starting to receive solidarity statements from other community groups and those on the Mainland and overseas."

The Star-Bulletin also has a story. which mentions the threat of arrest and offer to meet with students in small groups.

Oh, and here's the coverage yesterday from Ka Leo, the UH paper, which is more detailed than the two Honolulu dailies were yesterday.

The StopUARC blog has the latest update, posted at 9:30 this morning, which I believe was a statement issued to the press:

This morning, interim President McClain has proposed to meet individually with members of our coalition. We reject that offer because we feel that he should negotiate with our entire group.

It goes on to say that they realize McClain is in a difficult position and hasn't sufficient time to meet their demand that he officially turn down the UARC, so they are going to craft a new proposal over the weekend and make it public Monday at 9 am. They are holding a vigil tomorrow morning and invite everyone to attend.

Also note the photos from yesterday of upside down Hawaiian kingdom flags, which is an international symbol of a nation in distress. It is clear that on one level this issue is about the militarization of the University, but on another level it is about the larger issue of Hawaii's history and the military occupation of the islands as a whole.

I have posted another diary at DailyKos.

And Doug looks at the media coverage and offers some thoughts, including some suggestions for the protesters to be effective, over at Poinography.
