No righteousness in ruining 'aina

Advertiser columnist Lee Cataluna writes about the value of Hawaii's 'aina, beyond money, and the military's pattern of ruining land, not cleaning it up, and just looking for more land to shoot up.

"Our state motto should be more than something we make kids memorize in the fifth grade. It should be more than the words on the government seal. Ua mau ke ea o ka 'aina i ka pono. The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness. What could be righteous, honorable and free from guilt or wrong about ruining Hawaiian land and walking away from the mess, only to look for a new place to destroy?"

Steve Tayama (who I know happens to be a veteran and pro-independence) writes a letter in the Star-Bulletin that:

"Again the United States breaks its word of honor. The Marines said they would clean up Waikane Valley and return it to its owner. Same with Kahoolawe. Same with numerous other military sites here. The truth is they cannot clean it up. The primary mission of the military is to blow up, not clean up. Now they want 30,000 more acres. To allow them to ruin more land isn't patriotic, it's foolish. Foolish for our environment. Foolish because it encourages war. Foolish because we need the money for more important things like housing, jobs, schools and hospitals."

And Eric Po'ohina writes a letter in the Advertiser saying that Kaho`olawe is proof that activism pays off, and calls on Hawaiians to get out and fight for their culture.
