Kaho'olawe return

The Advertiser has a feature on Kaho'olawe, the island that was used as a target for Navy and RIMPAC bombing exercises for four decades, and that is a "rallying point for the Native Hawaiian sovereignty movement." It is being formally turned over to the state this month (with a clause to go to a sovereign Hawaiian entity when it is formed and recognized), although the Navy has fallen far short of their cleanup promises, and much of the island remains unusable. A ceremony marking the transfer to the state will be held Nov. 12 at 'Iolani Palace at noon, preceded by a cultural ceremony at the 'ahu on the palace grounds at 11:30 a.m.

And the Maui News reports on the Protect Kaho'olawe 'Ohana's assertion that the Navy has failed to meet its agreed-upon goals for cleanup and restoration of the island.

The other day an uncle who was part of the early Kaho'olawe movement brought up to me the fact that the island is shaped like a fetus when viewed from the air, with Molokini as the piko (navel) and Maui as the mother, and this is a cultural perspective held by Hawaiians. Given this, "bombing the fetus" is what he called "the ultimate metaphor" of American military occupation in Hawaii.
