Hawaii judge chides Federal Reserve Board

The Advertiser reports that "A federal judge appears poised to rule today or tomorrow against a group of Native Hawaiians in their demand that the Federal Reserve Board deny Bank of America its latest merger request until it fulfills a 10-year-old commitment to provide $150 million in mortgage loans to Hawaiian homesteaders... However, Ezra told the attorney for Federal Reserve Board, Kit Wheatley, that 'the record appears to be pretty clear that they (the bank) made a commitment and that they haven't met that commitment. It appears here there's a wrong that has to be righted,' Ezra said."

Pacific Business News reports that Ezra "scolded the Federal Reserve Board on Wednesday, saying it has failed to ensure that loan commitments to Native Hawaiians would be upheld in Bank of America's merger with FleetBoston Financial Corp."

The Star-Bulletin article quotes Ezra thus: "The situation that exists here is an embarrassment. This lawsuit is a cry for help. There is no other way they could get someone's attention. They certainly got my attention." And notes that Ezra said he hopes that if he dismisses the lawsuit based on jurisdictional issues, it will not be taken as a signal the case is without merit.
