Hawaiian programs in court, protests held

The Advertiser reports: "All the debates over Native Hawaiian entitlements in recent months will come to a head this week at federal court, where three separate hearings are set over two days to air challenges to key Hawaiian institutions."

The Star-Bulletin reports that a series of marches begins today to protest three lawsuits aimed at native programs . "Native Hawaiians and their supporters plan to march on Iolani Palace this afternoon and then to U.S. District Court tomorrow, where the future of hundreds of millions of dollars in educational programs, loans, leases and other benefits for native Hawaiians is being put on trial in three separate courtrooms."

In an Advertiser commentary, the Board of Trustees and acting CEO of Kamehameha Schools say the school is grateful for support as it defends admissions policy in court, and another Advertiser article says that the attorneys for the plaintiffs argue that "the argument that the Hawaiian-preference admission policy is justified as a way to make up for past injustices to Hawaiians is simply not relevant."

Friday when I was in Kahului there was a rather large (for Kahului) demonstration of support for Hawaiian rights stretching out along the sidewalk for two long blocks. Most of the demonstrators were `opio, and I think they must have been from Kamehameha Schools' Maui campus (as you can see from the sign). I was inspired to see so many young people out expressing themselves. A new generation of Hawaiian activists... I snapped this photo as I drove by honking:
