"Ma Ka Malu Ali'i: The Legacy of Hawaii's Ali'i"

Thursday, February 8 at 8 p.m., PBS Hawaii (Channel 10 or 11)

The one-hour show provides an even-handed look at the five charitable trusts founded by the ali'i (chiefs or monarchs).

From PBS HAWAII PROGRAM GUIDE:

"Two worlds collide, and 19th century Hawaii is shadowed by uncertainty."

This is the first line from the PBS Hawaii production, "Ma Ka Malu Ali'i: The Legacy of Hawaii's Ali'i." In this one hour program, filmmakers Lisa Altieri and Steve Okino document the incredible struggles that the Hawaiian population faced and the foresight that five strong ali'i showed to preserve their race.

Their benevolence is seen in the vision of Bernice Pauahi for Kamehameha Schools, Queen Emma for The Queen's Health System, William Charles Lunalilo for The Lunalilo Home, Queen Lili'uokalani for the Lili'uokalani Children's Center, and Queen Kapiolani for the Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.

As foreigners crowd a once thriving Hawaiian nation, disease and the deposition of Hawaii's reigning monarchy threaten to diminish the population. "Ma Ka Malu Ali'i" makes very clear why the Ali'i rose to the occasion to create intuitions that not only helped Hawaiian people of their time, but also look with clear vision to the future to help generations yet to come.

What were the struggles the Ali'i had to face to start their respective institutions? And with the vast changes occuring in this Island nation, how did legal and political issues shape their destiny? What is the future for each of them? Providing education, care for women and children, healthcare, comfort for the elderly, and support for Hawaiian children at risk serve as basic objectives for these five institutions that most of the people of Hawaii know very little about.

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs and PBS Hawaii are proud to present "Ma Ka Malu Ali'i" to our members and viewers, and we are very thankful to all of these institutions for their cooperation and support.

[NOTE: For Hawaiian music lovers, "Na Mele," with Haunani Apoliona and Ku'uipo Kumukahi airs just prior, on the same station at 7:30]
