Native Hawaiian population growing, but...

According to this Advertiser article, a report (PDF) just release by Kamehameha Schools indicates that the total number of Native Hawaiians living in the U.S. is expected to more than double by the year 2050. This includes part-Hawaiians regardless of blood quantum, and it makes sense just in terms of population growth trends in general.

In contrast, what the report and article don't seem to mention is full-blooded Kanaka Maoli, who are currently estimated to number only around 5,000, many elderly. According to a 1987 report issued by the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, as mentioned in a Centers for Disease Control Chronic Disease article from 2002, is that full-blooded Native Hawaiians "will be extinct in their own homeland by 2044 if current trends in mortality rates continue." Some of this has to do with natural intermarriage, but it is also do to the health status and mortality rates. "In 1990, census data indicated that death rates for full-blooded Native Hawaiians were nearly four times higher than the rates for all other racial and ethnic groups in Hawai'i combined."
