KS suit settled, Kingdom law cited
The Advertiser reports
that Judge Ezra has approved the settlement agreed to by Kamehameha Schools and
the plaintiffs, citing Hawaiian Kingdom law as a basis for his decision.
Regarding the issue of hanai, adoptions, "'This was the law of the kingdom,'
[Judge Ezra] said, repeatedly tapping his bench with his finger. 'This was the
law of Hawai'i at the time Bernice Pauahi Bishop made her will. She was a
brilliant woman. She understood the
law.'"
The Star-Bulletin also covers the settlement and provides background on the hanai issue and reactions in the community.
