Ku‘oko‘a: A Celebration of Hawaiian Nationals
Sunday, July 31, 2005 • Native Books Ward Warehouse
3:00pm to 5:00pm

Pae ‘Aina Productions, in partnership with Native Books/Na Mea Hawai‘i–Ward Warehouse, will host a celebration of Hawaiian Nationals, as well as, those who have always supported the Hawaiian Nation. The day will launch the re-issuing of the Ku‘e Petitions in an “island-by-island” format; The Hawaiian Civil Code of 1884, as well as Treaties and Conventions will also be available. There will be presentations by Law Professor Williamson Chang, and Ph.D. Candidate in Political Science, David Keanu Sai (additional speakers maybe added).

An opening pule will start the event just before 3:00pm. Pupu and refreshments will be available, as well as T-shirts, and a display table of informational resources. There will be time for questions, and ample opportunity for attendees to mingle and talk story. The speakers will present information on nationality, the Hawaiian State, and La Ho‘i Ho‘i ‘Ea, or Restoration Day–when in 1843 the Hawaiian Kingdom was restored after being briefly overthrown by British Officials, Kamehameha III created the Restoration Day celebration and uttered the now famous motto “Ua mau ke ea o ka aina I ka pono.”

“We want people to reconnect with their ancestors, and come to know the courageous efforts made by Hawaiian Nationals, both Hawaiian and Non-Hawaiian, to stand as a nation, as a people,” says event organizer, Nai‘a Watson. “It’s so easy to get caught up in the drama of the present, and become fearful of an unknown future but we can only be helped by understanding our past and building our identities based on fact instead of fiction.”
