Culture and Tourism; Military recruiting

Lecture on Sustainable Tourism will focus on the ties between culture and tourism.

The release of student data, including unlisted home phone numbers, to military recruiters is protested. The Hawaii chapter of the American Friends Service Committee is providing opt-out forms and related resources for students, and is planning to participate in the National Opt Out Day of Action on September 23.

Another letter the Advertiser today, in the exchange that was sparked by Twigg-Smith. Like Twiggy's original letter, this one claims that the Queen was overthrown by her own subjects. Congress said in the Apology Bill, however, that:

"the report of a Presidentially established investigation conducted by former Congressman James Blount into the events surrounding the insurrection and overthrow of January 17, 1893, concluded that the United States diplomatic and military representatives had abused their authority and were responsible for the change in government."

U.S. Secretary of State Walter Q. Gresham stated in his October 18, 1893 letter to President Cleveland:

"The earnest appeals to the American minister for military protection by the officers of that Government, after it had been recognized, show the utter absurdity of the claim that it was established by a successful revolution of the people of the Islands.  Those appeals were a confession by the men who made them of their weakness and timidity.  Courageous men, conscious of their strength and the justice of their cause, do not thus act.  It is not now claimed that a majority of the people, having the right to vote under the constitution of 1887, ever favored the existing authority or annexation to this or any other country.  They earnestly desire that the government of their choice shall be restored and its independence respected."
