(full-time)

Job Title: Hawai’i Human Rights and Demilitarization Program Coordinator
Job Location: Honolulu, Hawai’i
Supervision: Hawai’i Area Program Director

Seeking a full-time (35 hours per week) Program Coordinator for the Human Rights & Demilitarization Program, to work out of the O’ahu, Hawai’i Office.

Some weekends and evening meetings are required. The Program Coordinator is responsible for certain designated aspects of AFSC programs in Hawai’i and for a share of administrative and clerical duties. The Program Coordinator works under the guidance of the Hawai’i Human Rights and Demilitarization Program Director, the Hawai’i Human Rights and Demilitarization Program Committee and the Regional Executive Committee. The current program priority is promoting a demilitarized society in Hawai’i based on principles of peace, human rights, social justice and environmental sustainability and grounded in Kanaka Maoli core values.  This involves community organizing, research, public education and the development of resource materials around these issues. The salary range starts at $36,100, depending on experience. The position begins approximately Monday, June 18, 2007.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

〈        Experience within or outside AFSC relevant to the issues of importance to the Hawai’i Office with particular emphasis on Asian and Pacific Islander community issues.
〈        Significant experience in community organizing for social change, justice and peace.
〈        Ability to work with people of different cultural backgrounds and political viewpoints.
〈        Ability to develop and implement community-oriented programs.
〈        Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing.
〈        Ability to take initiative in handling details, follow up with program details and carry considerable responsibility with minimal supervision.
〈        Ability to work within the AFSC structure of committees and use of the Quaker decision making process in coming to unity.
〈        Commitment to social justice and non-violent approaches to social change and conflict resolution.
〈        Strong identification with AFSC values of peace, justice, nonviolence, open-mindedness and respect for the worth and dignity of all persons.

BACKGROUND: AFSC is a Quaker-based, non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Founded in 1917, its purpose is to engage in religious, charitable, social, and philanthropic and relief work in the United States and in other countries on behalf of the participating Yearly Meetings and other bodies of the Religious Society of Friends in the United States of America. Its staff is made up of professionals who are either Quakers or who hold values in common with those Quaker beliefs upon which the organization is based. Programs address a variety of peace and social justice concerns and are determined by local and regional committees.
