Hala tree and Cable Ridge

A few weeks ago I took this photo of a lone hala tree in Kipahulu, and thought I would share it here. The location is at a bamboo plantation (clumping/noninvasive only) and native forestry restoration project called Whispering Winds Bamboo. Along with the bamboo nursery and about 20 acres of bamboo plantation, they have a tropical hardwood plantation (including kaumani), and down the middle of the land they are planting of corridor of koa and other native Hawaiian plants that connects to the mauka forest, propagating the plants down from the forest. The foreground here is part of the corridor, and the hala tree was left in place while alien plants were removed from around it to be replaced by natives. The area visible behind the hala tree has been replanted with koa. The ridge in the background behind/above that is known as Cable Ridge. Unfortunately no one seems to know its original name. It is biologically rich, with a predominantly native forest above 2500 feet or so, and extends up to the Paliku side of Haleakala Crater through an area that was designated in 1980 as a UN Biosphere Reserve. Through the Kipahulu Ohana, in partnership with Whispering Winds Bamboo, we have fenced a couple of acres on the ridge where there are two endangered species (alana and a`e) and one species that was declared extinct in the 1920s (haha) which were under dire assault from goats. Inside this exclosure, the native plants, now protected from goats, are self-seeding and doing well. This will serve as the initial preserve and gene bank for our long-term plans for protection and restoration of the area, which is also an important traditional cultural gathering area.
