History, military, courts, families, language

A panel discussion titled "Who Owns the Past?" about how interpretations of history affect people today will begin at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at 'Iolani Palace.

The Advertiser has a piece on the endangered plants that were destroyed when the Army's 'controlled burn' got out of control at Makua. And the Hawaii Tribune-Herald has a piece on the Army Stryker brigade impacts on the Big Island.

A letter by Mel McKeague in response to Robert Chapman says U.S. courts have no jurisdiction in Hawaiian kingdom.

The Star-Bulletin has an interesting story about the prevalence of extended families and multi-generational households in Hawaii, particularly among Native Hawaiians, based on a U.S. Census Bureau study released yesterday. (Hawaii had its own census prior to the occupation.) "Hawaii has more than double the national average of households where grandparents and grandchildren live under the same roof and leads the nation in that category..." And: "Native Hawaiians had a much higher percentage of grandparents who were primary caregivers to their grandchildren -- about 38 percent of grandparents who identified themselves as native Hawaiian took care of their grandchildren."

A story about funding for the Hawaiian language program at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. And another story in the Tribune-Herald. The program's Hawaiian language website is a great resource.
