Farmers want UH to just drop taro patents
It looks likes I jumped the gun in
congratulating Walter Ritte and others about the UH decision to give up its
hybrid taro patents to a Hawaiian entity, as it appears from today's
Star-Bulletin story
that Ritte and others want the university to just drop the patents altogether,
and dismissing the university's fear that others outside the university would
claim the patents. "Hawaiians are saying that the taro cannot be owned, so why
would the Hawaiians want to own it?" Ritte said. I still like the idea of exploring
some patent equivalent of an open source general public
license or Creative Commons
Deed.
