Sale of Hawaiian skull draws federal charge

The Advertiser reports that "A California man has been charged with violating federal law by offering to sell a 200-year-old Hawaiian skull on eBay. [...] Jerry David Hasson, a 55-year-old Huntington Beach resident, was charged yesterday by the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles with violating the federal Archaeological Resources Protection Act. In February, he attempted to sell the skull, advertising it on eBay as a "200-year-old warrior" taken from the Ka'anapali area in 1969, the U.S. attorney's office said."

Hui Malama I Na Kupuna O Hawai'i Nei assisted with the investigation, and will be involved in the procedure for returning the skull for reburial. The article recounts how, although the skull was removed from eBay after officials there were notified of the auction, and Eddie Ayau from Hui Malama tried to pursuade Hasson to return the skull, a federal agent then posed as a buyer and Hasson tried to get away with the sale by including it as a "gift" with another auction item. The article also says the skull was identified as that of a woman, over 200 years old, so it would not have been that of a warrior.

The Star-Bulletin also has an article on the case.

A post from when the auction was first attempted has links to several background articles.
