Hawaiian Hip-Hop

Sudden Rush, the Hawaiian rap/hip-hop band out of Hilo, has a new website. Or relatively new, I'm not sure when it went up but I just became aware of it. "Ea" is their third album (which means Sovereignty / Independence). The first was "Nation on the Rise" and the second was "Ku'e" (which means Resist). I spent a lot of time listening to and being inspired by "Ku'e" while making Hawaiian websites over the years, and otherwise being involved in the movement. Their music, with raps in English and `olelo Hawai`i, is very political and intelligent, and they have been a powerful force in raising the consciousness of Hawaiian youth. When they perform live the audience knows their lyrics and chants along with them, which to me is a testament to how strong the independence movement is in Hawaii. If you read the lyrics you'll see what kind of message they are putting out. There are also audio samples of "Ea" at quietstorm.com (especially check out the track Messenjah's) and audio samples of "Ku'e" on their old website (listen to tracks True Hawaiian and Ku'e to get a taste of the message). The CD "Ku'e" especially has some very sharp political statements, but also some very positive cultural and social messages, about the importance of respecting and listening to the kupuna (elders), and of education and spirituality. Buy "Ea" and "Ku'e."
