First meeting of Maui County Kupuna Council Wednesday

The Maui News reports:

The Kupuna Council of Maui County will meet for the first time at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the ninth-floor mayor's lounge of the Kalana O Maui Building.

The council came about when Mayor Alan Arakawa was approached by a group of community elders, who asked him to form such a panel to advise him on issues and other concerns. The panel will consist of nine members, one each representing the districts of Lahaina, Wailuku, Kahului, Kihei, Makawao-Paia, Upcountry, East Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

The council's primary objectives are to stabilize, restore, protect and preserve Hawaiian cultural resources; stand for social, economic and cultural justice for all; provide a forum where all interested parties can seek solutions; and unify county residents under "an umbrella of aloha."

Membership on the council is open to any kupuna. Elders in each geographical area will elect a member of their region to represent them. Representatives will vote on issues only after consulting with other kupuna in their respective districts. For more information on the council, contact D. Mele Carroll at 270-7217.
