Certified Kitchen in Kipahulu

I forgot to post this last week, but there was a piece in the Maui News about the certified kitchen I'm working on in Kipahulu, which just received a grant of $36K from OHA. This is sort of a separate hat I wear, but related to my Kipahulu 'Ohana work. The kitchen is actually being coordinated through another organization (Kipahulu Community Association) but in a small community like Kipahulu inevitably a lot of the same people are involved, and the Kipahulu 'Ohana will be one of the main users of the kitchen, where we plan to make poi (kalo and ulu), dry bananas and other fruit, and process and package ha and luau leaf, cane juice and other fruit juices, and pohole and bamboo shoots, among other things. The kitchen is the third leg of part of our community/culturally based economic development plan. Kapahu Living Farm provides production, the kitchen will enable commercial processing, and the hale ku'ai (for which we had the blessing at the end of last month) will provide a main outlet for marketing of the products.

Here's a recent picture of the facility, and the enclosed area in the back will be the kitchen itself. (Off the grid, btw, with solar power and solar hot water.)
