Akaka: Independence movement "active" among young Hawaiians

There's this AP piece in the LA Times today (other articles here):
Hawaii Sen. Daniel K. Akaka warned fellow senators on Wednesday that failure to adopt his bill to grant Native Hawaiians federal recognition could lead to a "divided Hawaii," with many young Hawaiians wanting the islands to become a separate nation.

The Democrat reintroduced his Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act in a Congress controlled by Democrats for the first time in 12 years.

An identical bill was introduced in the House by Democratic Reps. Neil Abercrombie and Mazie K. Hirono, both of Hawaii.

"Despite the perceived harmony, it is the generation of my grandchildren that is growing impatient and frustrated with the lack of progress being made," said Akaka, 82. "Influenced by a deep sadness and growing intolerance, an active minority within this generation seeks independence from the United States."

Yes, a sitting United States senator is discussing the potential of Hawaii's independence and raising awareness about the "active" movement toward that goal. Active minorities can turn into majorities.

But while Akaka warns one way, in the Star-Bulletin article, William Burgess says the bill "would almost certainly lead to secession." [Update: exact same language in the Advertiser article from Sen. Lamar Alexander: the bill would "almost certainly lead to secession".]

So, just to be clear, Sen. Akaka warns that we need to pass the bill to prevent Hawaii from becoming independent, and Sen. Alexander warns that we need to stop the bill to prevent Hawaii from becoming independent.

Meanwhile, some Hawaiians argue that we need to stop the bill to prevent Hawaii from being prevented from becoming independent. While of course some argue that Hawaii already is independent, under prolonged occupation, and this internal U.S. legislation doesn't change that one way or another.

One thing I know: reintroduction of the bill means this conversation continues, and more people get exposed to the true history of Hawaii and the potential for restoration of effective independence, as it gets debated in the media and on the floor of the Senate and House, for all the world to see.
