Hawaii Succeeding? Just a rumor...

Doug at Poinography picks up on an interesting (and as he points out, unintentionally humorous) tidbit from a story (PDF file) in The Hawaii Marine, the MCBH newspaper, covering a speech Gov. Lingle made at the Marine Corps base on Tuesday (my emphasis):
Members of the audience asked about issues concerning veteran's benefits and the Akaka bill, which is the Native Hawaiian Recognition bill. A question was also asked about the rumor about Hawaii succeeding from the United States. The governor answered by saying that it was just that — a rumor.

First, the sort of funny part... does the reporter for the military paper really not know the difference between seceding and succeeding?

Doug says:
It would seem that Governor Lingle has either not been reading Scott Crawford’s blog carefully about “secession,” or that she is overly pessimistic about any chance of “success” in Hawaii, ha ha.

Or maybe they meant it in terms of the "succession" of States, or "the replacement of one State by another in the responsibility for the international relations of territory." No?

What I find interesting is that this "rumor"—which was actually sparked by Sen. Kyl's report saying that the Akaka bill is a potential path to “total independence” and provides a vehicle for Hawaii's citizens to secede from the union—has made it into these circles, and that someone in this setting asked the governor a question about it. Even that they are actively thinking about and discussing the concept of Hawaii's independence at the marine base is noteworthy.

And re the term "secession," to reiterate, from the post Doug links to:

For the record, it isn't secession. There was never a valid cession or acquisition of Hawaii's sovereignty or territory by the United States. Hawaii is occupied. We do not seek to secede from the union. We seek to expose the legal facts that show that Hawaii has never been a part of the union in the first place.
