OHA poll showing Akaka bill support flawed

H. William Burgess (the attorney who filed Arakaki v. State of Hawaii in an attempt to dismantle OHA and DHHL), has a guest editorial [link now broken - ed]in the conservative Hawaii Reporter, citing the Star-Bulletin online poll on the Akaka bill which showed 3-1 opposed, and taking apart the methodology and conclusions of OHA's oft-cited poll that showed opposite results. Despite the fact that I completely disagree with Burgess' motives and methods re Hawaiian programs, and I oppose the Akaka bill for quite different reasons, he does provide some interesting insight into the OHA poll which purports to show support for the bill. He says:

Had the Honolulu Star-Bulletin asked to see the survey, it would have learned it was not an independent poll at all, but “Pre-Campaign Research” commissioned by OHA to “plan to launch a communications campaign in support of Hawaiian nationhood” and the Akaka bill. All questions were designed in consultation with OHA. Even with the deceptive “explanation” used in the survey of what the bill would do, the Ward Research report concludes,

“In the non-Hawaiian population, however, no consensus exists relative to Hawaiian-only programs, entitlements and a future Hawaiian government. Clearly, non-Hawaiians are not prepared to accept the creation of a Hawaiian nation in the near future.”

Quite a bit different from what OHA has been telling the community and the pols in D.C.
